Colliding Black Holes, Gravitational Waves and the Event Horizon

October 24 at 7 PM at the Johnson Geo Centre, 175 Signal Hill Road

Groundbreaking observations during the last four years have confirmed Einstein’s general relativity and revolutionised astrophysics. Gravitational wave astronomers now hear a black hole merger almost every week. They’ve heard black holes eat neutron stars and neutron stars collide to form new black holes. Radio astronomers have even taken a picture of the event horizon itself. In this talk, Dr. Ivan Booth, Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Memorial University, will discuss these amazing observations and preview what’s still to come. Spoiler: it’s only going to get better!
